Mount Evelyn History Group

The Mount Evelyn History Group (MEHG) incorporated in 2008, after functioning for some years as a subcommittee of MEEPPA. History Group members research, write and publish on all aspects of local history connected with the town.

Publications include Tracks to Trails a History of Mt Evelyn, Aborigines in the Yarra Valley & Northern Dandenongs (new edition), The Happy Hermits and Diary of a Trip to Evelyn, Bill & Gwen Hardy dynamos of Mt Evelyn community life, The First Selectors of Mt Evelyn, How Mt Evelyn was Named, Street Names of Mt Evelyn (also updated recently) and Researching Your House in Mt Evelyn. The History Group publishes a quarterly newsletter, Things Past.

The newsletter can be found on the group’s website, The group is on Facebook under ‘Mount Evelyn History Group’. Many people contact MEHG with queries about family history. The ‘History Tools’ blog gives hints for Mt Evelyn research, especially for your family or house history:

MEHG meets at the RSL Hall, Hardy House, 49 Birmingham Road, Mt Evelyn. February, April, June, August and October meetings are held on the third Monday of the month at 7:30pm. Meetings in March, May, July, September and November are held on the third Saturday in the month at 1:30 pm.

Saturday meetings usually include a speaker or activity. Members enjoyed a driving tour of the Olinda Creek at the end of 2016 and a garden tour of Coombe Cottage early in 2017.Visitors are welcome at meetings and lectures but do check first to confirm dates and times.
